Medical Cannabis

Mayjorad’s Tamarack Pharmacy is a privately owned Pharmacy on Franklin Avenue in Fort McMurray, Alberta , Canada, serving patients across the Fort McMurray, and across Wood Buffalo Region. We have collaborative agreement with Physicians that assess and prescribe Medical Cannabis for patients (via telehealth). 
 
Our intake process involves a thorough assessment, standard medical review and registration that are designed to ensure that you safely receive the care you need.
 
The ACMPR (Access to Cannabis for Medical Purposes Regulations) provides a legal framework for patients to legally use cannabis for beneficial relief of various symptoms.

Mayjorad Pharmacies at any of their locations have clinical pharmacists that are highly knowledgeable about Medical Cannabis.

Our pharmacists provide advisory consultations on Medical Cannabis, screen potential patients for eligibility for medical cannabis and refer eligible patients to doctors licensed to write prescriptions for medical cannabis.

We also transfer issued medical cannabis prescription to any of the Canadian licensed medical cannabis producers. The producers will hence, reach out to patients for the home delivery of the chosen medical cannabis products.

What to Expect
 
Our Pharmacist’s Role:
Our clinical pharmacist’s role is to answer all patients concerns or questions about medical cannabis, conduct medication reviews and assess patient eligibility through chart review and/or discussions and refer eligible patients to primary care physician or specialist(s).
 
Our pharmacists provide advisory consultations on Medical Cannabis, screen potential patients for eligibility for medical cannabis and refer eligible patients to doctors licensed to write prescriptions for medical cannabis.
 
We also transfer issued medical cannabis prescription to any of the Canadian licensed medical cannabis producers. The producers will hence, reach out to patients for the home delivery of the chosen medical cannabis products.
 
Telehealth Physician’s Roles:
Telehealth physician’s role is to assess patient eligibility through chart review and/or discussions with the patients’ primary care physician or specialist(s). When deemed eligible, an appointment is scheduled for either an in clinic or telehealth appointment. 
 
The telehealth consultations accommodate patients that cannot travel to clinic due to illness or distance. It allows patients across the Northern Alberta to benefit from the medical cannabis services that are otherwise unavailable. In either case, the physician will complete the required medical document authorizing the patient to use cannabis as medicine.
 
Following the patient/physician consultation, the patient will work with our pharmacist at Mayjorad Pharmacies for follow ups and or clarifications on every drug related questions and Cannabis education.
 
Medical Cannabis Registration Forms
Understanding which forms you need to complete can be confusing, we have developed a system to alleviate this. Mayjorad Pharmacies pharmacist will work with every patients to ensure all forms are properly submitted, ensuring quick and easy access to prescribed medication.
 
Processing Times
Under the ACMPR guidelines, the patients license is active from the date the doctor signs the prescriptive form. The chosen license producer will need to verify and process the documentation, which can take approximately 3-5 business days.
 
Prescribing Medical Cannabis to Patients
Cannabis remains a Schedule II drug under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act., and can be accessed by medical cannabis appropriate patients who have an authorization/prescription from an authorized health care practitioner under the Access to Cannabis for Medical Purposes Regulations (ACMPR).
 
A health care practitioner includes physicians in all Canadian provinces and territories, and nurse practitioners in provinces and territories where supporting cannabis for medical purposes is permitted under their scope of practice.
 
The authorization/prescription is registered with a Health Canada Licensed Producer under the ACMPR.  The licensed producer will ship the patient their medical cannabis by mail order or courier to their residence.
 
When Will A Health Care Practitioner Consider A Patient Appropriate for Cannabis as a Treatment Option?
Health care practitioners considering prescribing medical cannabis to their patients should note that cannabis is not a first-line therapy for any medical condition. However, recently has been recommended as a third line treatment in neuropathic pain by the Canadian Pain Society (CPS).
 
If a patient has previously tried other prescription medication with minimal effect or unwanted side effects, medical cannabis may be an appropriate treatment option.
 
Health care practitioners in Alberta should consult Alberta provincial or territorial health care licensing authority’s guidelines and policies before authorizing the use of cannabis for medical purposes.

Relative Contraindications
Medical cannabis is not recommended if patients;
are under the age of 25
are allergic to any cannabinoid or to smoke
have serious liver, kidney, heart or lung disease
have a personal or family history of serious mental disorders such as schizophrenia, psychosis, depression, or bipolar disorder
are pregnant, are planning to get pregnant, or are breast-feeding
are a man who wishes to start a family
have a history of alcohol or drug abuse or substance dependence.
 
Drug Interactions
Cannabis may interact with several drugs. Particularly the following;
 
Any drugs which slow down the central nervous system, causing drowsiness. These may include sleeping pills, tranquilizers, some pain medications, some allergy or cold medications, or anti-seizure medications.
 
Other drugs may include anti-retroviral drugs used in the treatment of HIV/AIDS, certain anti-depressants, stomach acid inhibitors, certain antibiotic and anti-fungal medications, certain heart medications, and Saint John’s Wort.
